What is a rhinolith?

Rhinolith is a rare medical condition that occurs when a hard, calcified mass forms in the nasal cavity. These masses are made up of mucus, bacteria, and other materials that accumulate over time, gradually hardening and forming a stone-like object. Rhinoliths can cause a range of symptoms, including nasal obstruction, difficulty breathing, and a foul odor from the nose. In some cases, they can lead to infections and other complications. Treatment typically involves removal of the rhinolith via endoscopic surgery or other procedures. The condition is more common in adults and is associated with poor dental hygiene, chronic sinusitis, and other factors that contribute to the accumulation of material in the nasal cavity.
